During a magneto check, the priority is to increase RPM first. This is essential because a higher engine RPM enables the pilot to better assess the performance of each magneto under more representative operating conditions. By increasing RPM, you can observe a more pronounced drop in engine speed when switching between the two magnetos, which provides a clearer indication of how well each mag is functioning. Ideally, you want to see a drop of around 50 RPM or less per magneto during this test.

Checking fuel flow, adjusting manifold pressure, and monitoring airspeed are relevant considerations during flight operations, but they are not the primary focus of a magneto check.
